Job Overview

The Packaging Engineer II is responsible to support the Hostess Brands’ organization in R&D packaging innovation and development. Will manage and support multiple projects of various degrees of difficulty and complexity.  Duties include planning and conducting tests and trials, collecting, and evaluating data, and formulating conclusions to accomplish departmental goals. This position will play a key role in leading packaging efforts across bakery operations in both US and Canada.


  • R&D packaging lead through the Stage Gate PMO process.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver initiatives across innovation, renovation, sustainability, cost optimization, and growth strategy.
  • Develop and design new and improved products to deliver Hostess’ innovation pipeline strategy.
  • Understand COGS to support Quality, Design to Value (DTV), and ESG work streams.
  • Analyze consumer testing data and lab results to draw conclusions and communicate results.
  • Develop and implement new packaging technologies to enhance package functionality.
  • Maintain, improve, and optimize existing packaging materials and products.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute bakery tests and trials including distribution studies.
  • Coordinate all documentation that supports final packaging decisions and specifications.
  • Generate and maintain accurate and complete technical records utilizing an official lab notebook and a specification software system.
  • Develop ideas/data and write invention disclosure record.
  • Perform additional R&D duties as assigned.


  • 5+ years of experience within the food & beverage industry.
  • Packaging development for CPG, with experience in a variety of formats and materials.  Must have experience in corrugate, paperboard, and flow wrap.
  • Experience in shelf stable extended shelf-life sweet baked goods and fried products a plus
  • Packaging development in Stage/Gate process: Ideation/Scoping, Development, Qualification, Launch, and Sustaining.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional teamwork skills are highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of COGS and how to effectively use cost data in decision making.
  • Strong ability to identify and resolve product /packaging quality opportunities.
  • Bring and utilize supplier & industry network to support technology scouting.
  • Ability to influence and lead people in situations absent of a direct reporting structure.
  • Willingness to “take action” and comfortable with challenging assumptions.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good time management and multitasking skills.
  • Able to maintain a neat and organized work area.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and SAP applications required.
  • Ability to work in office, lab, and manufacturing environments.
  • Comfortable in ambiguous situations where we are the trail blazers.
  • Willingness to accept up to 40% travel as business dictates.
